A UPS stores DC energy and when needed, drives its own internal inverter that provides a 50Hz or 60Hz output. If I understand your question correctly, you are driving the input to the UPS with an inverter. If the flickering and clicking is coming from the UPS, it’s possible that the inverter at its input is incapable of providing it with a sufficiently stable voltage and current. Another possible explanation is that the product/load your UPS is driving demands more current than the UPS is capable of delivering.
